Creative Dance Classes

We support exploration, imagination, and self-expression through movement.

What is Creative Dance?

Creative dance is the joyful exploration of movement, imagination, and self-expression. Classes invite participants of all ages to connect with their bodies, discover new ways of moving, and express ideas, sensations, and stories through dance.

Using props, imagery, music, and guided movement explorations, participants are introduced to the main elements of dance — body, action, space, time, and energy. These are explored experientially, helping dancers notice how they move, where they move, with what quality, and in relation to music and others.

Through guided improvisation, playful exercises, and creative movement tasks, participants develop coordination, confidence, and creativity, while honouring each person’s unique style and abilities. Classes are structured with space for curiosity, rest, and connection.

Opportunities for relaxed, supportive performances allow participants to share their movement creations in a low-pressure, celebratory environment, fostering confidence, self-expression, and connection with others.

Classes available

This class runs as a weekly, term-based practice rather than a stand-alone workshop. The class is structured to support gradual learning, allowing skills, awareness, and creative expression to deepen over the term. Dancing together across a term helps participants develop trust, familiarity, and a shared movement language, supporting richer listening, creativity, and self-expression.

Everyone is invited to begin with a free trial class. After that, you can decide whether you’d register yourself or your child for the remainder of the term (classes work out to $20 each).

Creative Dance at Dance Garden

1. Exploration over performance

Movement is approached as a process of discovery rather than something to perfect or perform. Participants are invited to explore their own ways of moving through guided improvisation, creative tasks, and imaginative prompts. There is no expectation to “get it right” — curiosity and experimentation are encouraged.

2. Choice, imagination, and embodied learning

Sessions are thoughtfully structured to balance guidance with freedom. Participants learn through doing — sensing, moving, responding, and reflecting — building body awareness, confidence, and creative agency. Imagination and play remain central, whether the class is for children, teens, or adults.

3. Grounded, supportive environments

Classes are designed with care, consent, and inclusion at the centre. Movement is adapted to support different bodies, ages, and experiences, with an emphasis on safety, choice, and connection. Elements such as breath, rest, or grounding practices are woven in to support regulation and ease.

Classes are offered for children, teens, and adults, with each group supported in age-appropriate ways while holding the same core values of creativity, connection, and embodied expression.
